The Most Missed Variable: Waste Factor

The single biggest mistake in flooring estimation is forgetting to add waste. Every flooring job generates cut-off waste. Rooms with angles generate more. Always add waste — never bid net square footage.

Standard Waste Factors by Flooring Type

LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) straight lay: 10%

LVP diagonal lay: 15%

Hardwood straight: 10–12%

Hardwood diagonal or herringbone: 15–20%

Ceramic/porcelain tile straight: 10%

Tile diagonal: 15%

Carpet (broadloom): 10–15% depending on room shape

Calculating Net Square Footage

Measure length × width for each room. For irregular rooms, break them into rectangles and sum the areas. Subtract fixed obstacles like fireplaces, islands, or built-ins only if they exceed 5 sqft each.

Adding Waste

Multiply net sqft × (1 + waste factor). Example: 800 sqft room with 10% waste = 800 × 1.10 = 880 sqft to order.

Transitions and Trim

Don't forget:

T-molding transitions between flooring types

Reducer strips at doorways

Quarter-round or base shoe if replacing baseboards

Stair nose pieces for any stairways
